Almost 70 Oxford alumni have symbolically handed back their own degrees to criticise the university's weak policy on Fossil iPhone case fuels trading – which excludes only instruct investment in oil sands and in addition coal but fails to address several other money invested in unsustainable sources of winter.
Oxford University announced last week could possibly maintain its position of not having instruct investment in high-risk oil sands and coal; it also pledged to follow along with environmental and social criteria in connection with their investment.
However , many have announced this policy does not go by far enough, since it doesn't rule out trading in all dirty energy sources. As a demonstration against the decision, some Oxford students have symbolically handed back their own degrees on Saturday, calling for the school and stream serious action against climate redefine.
Miriam Wilson, Fossil Free Promo happening coordinator at People & Country, said, "Oxford alumni are passing back their degrees because they why want to be associated with a university which is money climate change through its cost savings. Whilst we welcome the fact that my university has ruled out direct purchases of coal and tar sands, we both call on the university to go more deeply, and fully divest from climate-wrecking fossil fuels. "
Among those giving the diploma back were Oxfordshire councillors to the Green Party David Thomas, Ruthi Brandt and Sam Hollick , as well as journalist George Monbiot and in addition founder of Solarcentury Jeremy Legget.
Martin Evans, who handed in the past his degree in Engineering, shown, "My degree was how I come across climate change, how energy efforts, how solar panels and wind turbines career, and how I came to work in electrical power. We're asking the university to try and do the simple thing of following what teaches, but it isn't practising what preaches. The university has to stick its promises on transparency and thus divest".
The fossil-free movement is actually gaining popularity among universities, local authorities and in addition religious institutions. However , some educational institutions are clashing with students and in addition campaigners over the decision to divest. Edinburgh University recently refused on ditch dirty energy shares, aiding protests among students and campaigners.
